Hello 2015 + Happy Australia Day

Australia Day means lots of different things. However, for our family this day always centred around Nonna Giovanna's birthday, January 25th. Sunday would have been her 94th birthday.

To celebrate and remember her, for an Australia Day BBQ yesterday, we made one of her favourite dishes - Melanzane. It is a delicious combination of fried eggplant, Napoli sauce, basil and Parmesan cheese in layers, similar to a lasagna.

Here I am (Jac), learning the ropes a few years ago. Note the intense look of concentration.

And here's the finished product! Which was happily devoured by a group of young friends

We think she would have approved!

Even as a 90-year-old woman, our Nonna knew the true value of these shared meals. Her food was the thread that bound our family together.

Everything about Granny Clarke is meticulous and it is no surprise to learn that she spent her career working as the head matron at the local hospital in Jerilderie.
